The Renaissance palace, located on the grounds of Prague Castle, stands on the site of a Romanesque and later Gothic house. The young prince Charles, later Charles IV, lived there after his return to Bohemia at the time when the royal palace was uninhabitable. The house was the residence of the highest burgraves, who used to represent the king in his absence. In 1555-1561, the builder Giovanni Ventura completely reconstructed the building. The original interior decoration of the so-called courtroom – with a painted wooden ceiling and frescoes – has survived from that period. Further modifications date back to the end of the 16th century. In the early 1960s, the Burgrave´s house and the neighbouring Lobkowicz Stables were converted into the House of Czechoslovak Children.
Please note: The exits from Prague Castle are closed at 22:00 (the exit to the Powder Bridge and the tram stop Pražský hrad) and at 23:00 the others.
