Malá Vikárka

Vicar’s Street is named after the house built by Emperor Sigismund for the vicar of St. Vitus Cathedral. In addition to the house of St. Vitus chapter´s deans, there was a vicars’ house, which later expanded into two houses – the old vicarage or Malá Vikárka, behind which is the Powder Tower or Mihulka, and the new vicarage or Velká Vikárka, where the famous Vikárka restaurant existed a hundred years ago. Both houses were adapted in the 1960s for a renovated restaurant. During Emperor Rudolf II’s reign, the houses were connected by a corridor to St. Vitus Cathedral. That was the environment where the writer Svatopluk Čech set his well-known story featuring the main character Matěj Brouček, a Prague burgher.
