The original Gothic town house, which belonged to the St. Vitus Chapter in the 14th century, was later rebuilt in late Gothic and Renaissance styles. Its present appearance comes mainly from the modifications made after 1770, when the Kolowrats acquired it and had it rebuilt into an early Baroque four-winged palace. After the Kolowrats, the palace was owned by the Hrzáns of Harrasov and other owners. Many well-known personalities lived there: T. G. Masaryk, F. Engelmüller, and J. Slavíček. In the 1950s, the building was adapted for the Ministry of Information and Enlightenment; today, it serves the representative purposes of the Czech Republic´s Prime Minister.
