The Fortna Monastery, a centre of spiritual and cultural life, offers a variety of events for the general public, but it is also a place of silence and reflection. The monastery has been a spiritual space for centuries. The Barnabite Order built it in the 17th century around the Church of St. Benedict. Later, Discalced Carmelites lived here in seclusion, which was forcibly interrupted only by the communist dictatorship. In 2020, the Discalced Carmelites moved from Prague´s bustling centre to a new calmer location. The Hradčany monastery was taken over by the Discalced Carmelite brothers and opened to the public. The shape of the Garden of Eden, a place for celebrating Masses and for gatherings, is based on the emblem of the Discalced Carmelites – Mount Carmel, a cross and three trees as three stars.
