It is a controversial, emotionally raw, and austere yet poetic text depicting six years of unequal relationship between the teenage Tereza, twelve at the story’s beginning, and Ivan, a fifty-year-old art club lecturer. Tereza is unaware that she is trapped in an illicit relationship with a manipulative man: with Ivan, she finally feels beautiful and admired. As she grows up, she reconsiders the whole situation, tries to escape the toxic cycle, and gradually becomes detached from Ivan. But can this be done? The short, punchy chapters, shocking in their frankness, resonate with us long after we finish reading.
