On a beach below the Tropic of Cancer, young boys are roaming around, performing beach services related to the sun’s movement across the sky, and scheming to break free from its power. In Copenhagen, an IT consultant misses a business meeting and instead gets seduced by a pale young man who initiates him into trading derivatives, a terrifying economy that has taken over the world of finance. A grief-stricken older man falls in love with a strange object in the desert. In a city that might be called London, three people are trying to form a family but are under pressure from addiction, lack of finances, and a baby on the way. Consciously or unconsciously, they all contribute to the demise of this world by preparing for the one to come.

Jonas Eika (*1991) is a Danish writer. He made his prose debut in 2015. Eika’s short story collection After the Sun (Efter Solen) (2018) went on to win the 2019 Blixenprisen Award for Best Book in the category of fiction and, subsequently, the Nordic Council Literature Prize, making him the youngest writer ever to be awarded this prestigious prize. In his thank-you speech, he expressed not only gratitude but, above all, criticism of the Danish Social Democratic government for adopting the racist language and policies of the previous government.
